Brand Evangelists? Porn-Stars? Who is Really Following you on Twitter?

Of course you should care how many Twitter followers you have. The bigger the number, the better…right?

I would argue that it’s not about how many likes and how many followers you have, it’s about who they are. Are they influencers? Do they evangelize your brand? Are they weird porn-related followers (you know what i’m talking about)? Would you rather have 5 twitter followers that blog about you and brag about you to everyone they know, or 500 weirdo spam followers? Who is more likely to convert into a paying customer?

Twitter-SuitsThe point is, don’t obsess over the number of followers you have on your social media networks. don’t stay up nights trying to figure out how to get X number of likes on facebook by next week. metrics such as number of followers and likes are great social proof and it definitely feels rewarding to see the numbers jump up, but make sure that you aren’t spending your valuable time sweating them. social media is just one part of the puzzle. don’t overestimate its importance.

Instead, focus on your concepts at large. do you know exactly who your target market is? can you develop messaging that motivates them and speaks directly to their needs? how do they feel after they’ve used your product or service? what is their level of happiness or feeling of comfort, satisfaction, confidence? the growth of your business is much more connected to these things than it is the number of your twitter followers.

If you stay committed to creating the ultimate customer experience, your social media numbers will go up naturally. while building a strong bond with your target, you will have also developed them into influencers- the very people that will brag about you to everyone they know. bring value to your customer and they’ll bring value to you!
