Startup Stories: Healing the World with Erotic Literature!

Angela and Lana of Go Deeper Press

Tell us about your entrepreneurial product or service.
We publish character-driven erotic stories, and we also run a sexual-spiritual course for women called The Mermaid Voyage: A Two-Week Journey of Erotic Self-Discovery. Not only have we been authors and editors for years, but we’re also reiki practitioners and angel readers, so our erotic stories and courses promote erotic wellbeing on every level. We’re passionate about sexuality, peace, and self-love. And we take the erotic very seriously.

What inspired you to launch your business idea?
When I was a girl who was deeply ashamed of her body and sexuality, I discovered the erotic works of Anais Nin. Suddenly, I wasn’t alone any more, and my whole life changed, because I realized that I wasn’t warped or twisted, but simply human. I hid that book under my mattress and prayed it would never be found. Without Nin, I don’t know what I would have done.

So, decades later, my partner Angela and I decided to launch Go Deeper Press and the Mermaid Voyage, in order to promote sex-positivity. We’ve been around less than a year, creating erotic materials that promote love, enjoyment, and pride.

What problem does your business or organization solve?
Right now, with Russia attacking its LGBTQ citizens, and families telling their children that sex is shame, we know that erotica—through its pride in sexuality—can save lives. We also know that shame can both take and ruin lives, sometimes without our even realizing it. So we believe that our erotic ventures promote erotic liberation and transformation in a world that really needs it.

Also, having taught erotic writing at Grub Street in Boston, where the majority of classes are literary in nature, I’d been meeting many writers who were penning erotica but didn’t feel their work was being taken seriously. Erotic writers are often passionate activists who feel very strongly about the craft. Go Deeper treats our writers and readers very seriously. And if, as a society, we’re to become more sex-positive, that is truly vital.

What has been your biggest challenge as an entrepreneur and how are you working to overcome it?
Time! Oh my goodness, time. We both work other jobs to keep ourselves going, and what we really want is to work at Go Deeper on a more full-time basis. We know what we’d do if we had the time, but my goodness, finding it is hard! That said, we work hard to prioritize. Also, we know it’s better to launch an e-book later than we’d hoped, rather than releasing a punctual yet poorly presented version. So we suck it up and do what we can!

Give us one word that people might use to describe you.
Ardent!

How has Project Eve helped you and/or your business?
It has been wonderful to read the start-up stories here. I admit, I only recently joined Project Eve recently and am still discovering the inspiring articles and entrepreneurs. I was particularly taken with the SERENE Social start-up story (https://www.projecteve.com/startup-storiesfinding-purpose-and-profit-in-connecting-women/). Sounds pretty darn fabulous!

Give us an insider tip that relates to your industry or startup story.
When you’re writing an erotic story or scene, it often helps to think of sexual experience in terms of emotion, sensation (i.e. the senses), and thinking. Most – but not all – great sex scenes contain a balance of these. Sex without thought and emotion is hard to write in an arousing way because the reader is not fully connected to the experience. We think this shows us a great deal about the holistic nature of the erotic!
