I am a social media novice. Sure, I have Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn accounts but I’ve just began to recognize them as the powerful tools they are. Until recently, I didn’t realize that I was this technologically ignorant. It’s a hard pill to swallow because the internet is all about connectivity and I pride myself on my ability to connect with almost everyone I come across. I genuinely love conversing with and learning about people and I do so often.
While having a manicure yesterday, I met a woman who at first glance had little in common with me. After hearing her talk about her two sons (I have two sons) and of her upcoming weekend away to attend a wedding (just like me) I struck up a conversation with her. Turns out, we each had valuable professional information to offer the other and I am eagerly awaiting our next chat.
Earlier today I had the honor of meeting and conversing with the highly esteemed Chef Georg Paullussen. My reward for hounding the concierge staff at the Ojai Valley Inn was a culinary tour and sit down with Chef Paullussen. It was a priceless experience – I left with a renewed sense of vigor and excitement for what I am trying to accomplish. Besides the tour, Chef Paullussen unselfishly gave me advice, book recommendations, and insider knowledge that would have been near impossible to attain on my own. To my surprise and delight, he gave me his business card and invited me to call him with questions. Dear reader, you have to understand the importance of this. Although I’ve been dying to be a part of the culinary world for as long as I can remember (I used to watch Iron Chef in Japanese!), this is a scary time for me. I am constantly doubting whether or not there truly is room for me or if I’m doing my family a disservice by not looking for another job in Office Administration. To have someone with a background that I respect tell me that my idea was feasible and to share the insights of his over two decade long career with me was extraordinary.
I still have a lot to learn about entering a Twitter conversation at the right time, or how to make sure that my posts, pictures and musings are seen. But the past two days were an important lesson – connections are all around me. Whether someone can give me career advice is not what’s important. Real connections with real people are important. I love the social aspect of food just as much as the technique used in preparing it. I love getting to know people and hearing their stories and sharing mine. I love my personal network of family and friends.
