The coveted work-life balance. I've read lots of articles offering tips and advice on finding and maintaining this delicate balance between work and life and I'll admit I'm not doing very well right now.
I'm a virtual assistant and work from home so the line between work and home couldn't be more blurred, but I had a pretty good handle on it at one point. I had a good schedule and was able to get my work done by a decent time, do things around the house, spend time with family, and get to bed at a reasonable hour. Now I find myself busier, which is a great problem to have, but I find the balance shifting again towards work and I need to deal with that before it gets out of control.
Being a small business owner and solopreneur by their nature means that I will be working longer hours than normal but I love what I do so that's not the issue; the issue comes when that is all I'm doing and I have little time for anything else.
I worked that way when I got my first clients and was so happy to have work that I stayed up half the night to make sure everything was done. That was understandable then because I was just starting out and had yet to put systems in place. Now I have those systems and with the extra work, it may be time to look at them again to make sure they are still the best ones for me.
The good news is I already take steps to ensure that I don't get consumed with work all the time. I usually take Saturdays and completely unplug: no computer or cellphone for the entire day and that really helps to clear my mind and help me recharge. Lately this is starting to spill into part of Sunday, which is fine with me because this is football season and I have to watch my Dolphins!
Look I am under no delusions that I will ever have a perfect work-life balance; I'm a bit of a workaholic so that's pretty much out of the question. Recognizing and taking steps to be sure that things stay as balanced as possible for me will lead to a happy work and home life and that's what we all want.
