Moruka Designs’ Startup Story

Tell us about your product or service.
Moruka Designs specializes in stylish handmade bags inspired by South American/Caribbean cultures.

What inspired you to launch your business?
Moruka Designs was created out of my love for my home country Guyana & my love for handbags. Inspiration is drawn from the melting pot of the 6 beautiful cultures which include African, Portuguese, Chinese, European, East Indian & Amerindian. My mom and grandmother always talked about the importance of business and education. They ran a successful feed, farming & trucking business when I was little. So I was bitten by the business bug at a very young age. I didn’t know what I was going to do when I grew up but I knew I was going to have a business some day.

What problem does your business or organization solve?
Moruka Designs exposes fashionistas to the culture of Guyana through the creation of well made, stylish handbags. It serves to let the world know about the creativity that comes from within the melting pot nation.

What has been your biggest challenge and how are you working to overcome it?
My biggest challenge is working by myself. I'm working to make more money so that I can hire extra help.

Give us one word that people might use to describe you.
Determined.

How has Project Eve helped you and/or your business?
The articles that I read on Project Eve give me inspiration to carry with my business.

Give us an insider tip that relates to your industry.
I'm pretty green in the handbag business so I don't have any insider tips. The only important tip I can give is to know your profit margin. Too many people don't attention to this. I was one of them but was able to rectify it.
