Murphy’s Law

There are times when nothing seems to go your way. The dog chewed up one of your nicest pair of shoes, the baby pukes before making it out the door, and those favorite pair of light colored slacks just got stained with the best tasting coffee ever. What is this Murphy’s Law? Well, pessimist would say, “This is not my day” but the optimist would say, “Oh well, things are going to get better”. The question is which one are you? Do you see the glass half full or half empty? Understand that what we say to ourselves in the midst of a chaotic morning has a significant impact on how our day will proceed.

According to Murphy’s Law “anything that can go wrong will go wrong”. Who is this pessimistic Murphy person? Well, according to Wikipedia and yes I understand that Wikipedia is not a scholarly source, but bare with me because the other sources basically suggest the same thing about “Murphy”. Captain Edward Murphy was a development engineer for the Air Force who passed the blame onto his protégé for his failed electronic device. Now should the optimist seek to identify themselves with Captain Murphy? I hope the answer is “NO”. I’m not attempting to discredit anything that Captain Murphy contributed to society. However, his ability to place blame on someone else because of his failure leaves me to second guess using the epigram “anything that can go wrong will go wrong”.

I would prefer to identify with the Law of Gravity (Theory of Relativity) “what goes up must come down” in laymen terms. In all

practicality something starting off bad eventually has to change to something good. Basically, nothing stays the same. I don’t pretend to be a scientist or totally understand physics, however I do know that the law of opposites which is my personal law that promotes the ideology that just as there is a night there will be a morning and just as there is failure there is success. Resist identifying your circumstance with Murphy’s Law. No matter how your morning appears to start let the words of your mouth and your thoughts lead you to success.
