Startup Stories: Meet Ms. Fix It
Founder, Homeowner Referral Network (HRN®) Business

Tell us about your product or service.
Home Remedies® is a Homeowner Referral Network (HRN®) business that pre-screens and refers a network of more than 50 home improvement contractors (i.e. painters, plumbers, carpenters, General Contractors, arhcitects, etc.) to local homewoners. Contractors in my network pay a pre-negotiated commission for work secured which means that my service is free to homeowners.

What inspired you to launch your business?
Several years ago after the birth of my first daughter, I left a career in Corporate America and after a few months of full time motherhood our bills began to pile up and my self esteem plummeted. At the same time, my husband and I had just purchased our first home and as new homeowners, we quickly realized how difficult it was to find reliable home improvement professionals. I'm a networker by nature with a passion for decorating and home improvements and I decided to put all of my talents to work and create a business that would fill this need in our community.

What problem does your business or organization solve?
The HRN business fills two niches in the home improvement market:

1. HRN's are a free resource for local homeowners looking for reliable contractors.
2. HRN's are an outsourced sales and marketing force for busy, reputable contractors.

And, the HRN business model is a turnkey business opportunity for anyone looking for a viable home based business.

What has been your biggest challenge and how are you working to overcome it?
Staying current with social media has been my biggest challenge. I try to keep current on new developments in social mediab but rather than trying to become an expert at everything, I've outsourced my social media responsibilities so that I can maintain focus on the most important aspects of my busiess.

Give us one word that people might use to describe you.

How has Project Eve helped you and/or your business?
Project Eve has connected me with a community of other entrepreneurial women so that I can learn from their experiences and expertise. It's challenging to be a home based entrepreneur working solo and, with Project Eve, I feel like I have a focus group to turn to.

Give us an insider tip that relates to your industry.
The online lead generation companies and review sites can't take the place of personal relationships when it comes to hiring a contractor. Many of these online businesses simply make money by generating as many leads as they can or accepting advertising. They're not truly invested in what's best for the contractor or the homeowner.
