Startup Stories: Women Who RISE! Joanna Bailey, Women Who RISE

Tell us about your product or service.
Women Who RISE is a community of women working to celebrate and promote others living a purpose driven life. We are more than a small business platform, or activists. We are a national organization who shine a light on women from all walks of life doing big things in their communities, and beyond. Our platform promotes educators, advocates of various focus, activists and businesses that have a broad vision. Women Who RISE believe that by connecting with other fearless leaders, sharing resources and selflessly promoting one another we create a bigger impact and can affect greater change.

What inspired you to launch your business?
After nearly two decades in industries where women regularly spear each other to move forward in inches, I was tired of the atmosphere of competition rather than collaboration. I was determined to create a business that fostered collaboration, selfless promotion of others and nurtured creativity. It is also important to me that my team be able to work under the daily construct that serves them and their family, so we are a completely virtual office, with women around the country! Through video chat, regular weekly meetings and email, we have developed an amazing team of motivated, whole-hearted do-ers!

What problem does your business or organization solve?
Through the years I have been to a variety of events that are designed to motivate women. You spend a few hours to a few days listening to other people talk about how amazing their life is, then you leave feeling pumped up but still don't have the tools to get started on your journey.

Women Who RISE does a few things differently. First, anyone who speaks at an event of ours is there to share their story; the real story. The truth about how challenging it is to move through anything, how they cleared their hurdles, the tools they used, the resources in their community that helped, etc. They aren't there to promote their brand because they understand that their brand is merely an extension of themselves. They also speak about what their mission is, beyond the brand.

The website is designed to offer a variety of resources to connect with, both in each community we travel to, and so much more! We showcase women from around the world who have amazing stories of perseverance and grit. The women featured on the website are invited to do so; they do not pay to be featured. I vet each individual based on what they've created and how it extends beyond themselves.

In addition to the women we feature and the communities that we are shining a bright light on, we also partner with exceptional organizations working to create opportunity for others, from water projects around the globe to putting veterans in touch with quality businesses as they transition from military life to the civilian workforce.

Unlike other female forward organizations, we don't have walls. Women Who RISE is for all women, of all ages, from any walk of life, working to advance their life, and the lives of others.

What has been your biggest challenge and how are you working to overcome it?
Money. I have built the business from the ground up, without outside financing or loans. We are working to attract sponsors that are aligned with our vision, primarily to support our national tour {the Big Girl Panty Tour!} which launches in Southern California this fall.

Give us one word that people might use to describe you.
Tenacious.

How has Project Eve helped you and/or your business?
I value the positive atmosphere that Project Eve offers, and the quality of the stories and resources I find here.

Give us an insider tip that relates to your industry.
Don't email if you have a direct phone number. Get on the phone and connect with people. As someone who answers hundreds of emails a day, I really appreciate when someone takes the time to pick up the phone and connect with me. I've found I get bigger results when I do the same. A lot can get lost in translation via email. Let people hear your passion and energy!
