Struggling With New Motherhood And Depression

Being a mom is not easy and it takes time to get comfortable in the role.

For Some It Doesn't Come So Naturally

Some new moms have it harder than others. For someone who may have been an only child or perhaps wasn't as close to her own mother, it can be very hard to know what to do and how to do it. Child rearing, like anything else, is learned. If someone never had the chance to be around small children and babies, it can feel as if your life has been invaded by this little creature who may as well be from another planet. This little creature cannot tell you what it wants or needs. This can be intimidating to the new mom and it is also very stressful because as women, we are just ‘expected' to know this stuff.

Don't be too hard on yourself. Your new baby and you are going to have to get to know each other and you'll learn soon enough how to know when your baby is hungry, just like you'll become a pro at changing diapers. You will have plenty of practice and after a few months, you'll feel like a professional at these things.

Moods

Some women have a very difficult time with mood swings after birth. For some, postpartum depression can be a very serious condition. This depression is extreme, can cause you to not bond with your newborn and needs to be treated. If you suspect that you have postpartum, you need to see your doctor immediately. Treatment will get you well on your way to feeling better and increase the odds that you and your little one are off on the right foot.

General mood swings may happen simply because your life has changed. Some women have to go back to work sooner than they'd like and this is a situation that creates sadness for them. Some women are facing life as single parents and having a newborn can be an exhausting task. For the first time parent, being single on top of that fact can be very hard to say the least.

Life Changes

For some, the changes in life are very difficult. No longer is it easy to go out and spend time with friends. Babies take a lot of time and demand all of your attention. This leaves very little time for shopping, jogging and your life as it used to be. This can be a very difficult adjustment for many women. Finding groups for moms and toddlers may be just what you need. While you may not be able to do the things you used to do, you can find new things to do that include your child. It takes some planning and being willing to change but it can be done.

You don't have to give up living in order to raise your baby. You simply need to adjust the way you live and find new things to do that you can include your child in. Your life is a book and you've opened a whole new chapter about being a mother. This can be some of the most beautiful years of your life depending on how you choose to handle them.
