Most likely your doing it right now, on your butt. Sitting.
Not big deal until hour four comes along & you begin yawn and to think one of the following: “my back is killing me”, “I just want to get this over with” or, one that I've pondered more times than I care to mention, “I think my rear-end is actually getting bigger at this very moment”; sounds familiar doesn't it? You take the occasional break to stand up and stretch your lower back or just take a turn around your office just to get some blood flow moving to your legs. Add to your day a two hour work commute in your car, catching up on Facebook & Pinterest and, the shameful guilty pleasure of, catching up with The Real Housewives (don't judge) all done while sitting; that is a lot of time on your butt!
No doubt you noticed how many articles have been published lately on the harmful effects of excessive sitting; glance through this harrowing article from the New York Times: Is Sitting A Lethal Activity? & you'll be sufficiently freaked out. The article states “This is your body on chairs: Electrical activity in the muscles drops — “the muscles go as silent as those of a dead horse,” says Marc Hamilton, an inactivity researcher at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center — leading to a cascade of harmful metabolic effects. Your calorie-burning rate immediately plunges to about one per minute, a third of what it would be if you got up and walked.”
I hear you now, your saying “I workout a much as I possibly can & I eat fairly well, I shouldn't need to worry, right?”; sadly, it's not enough. You can't “counter a pack-a-day smoking habit by jogging” Hamilton says. You also cannot counter the ill effects of excessive sitting with a visit to for gym a few hours a week.
What can be done? Must we all succumb to the inevitable fate that befalls the digital age we live in…having a huge caboose? Heck no! Stand up Girl! Stand up for your heart, your creativity, your mental clarity, and yes, stand up for your butt!
Stand up right now & see what happens. And while your up there, skip the gym & get a few exercises in; standing squats, leg lifts, desk push-ups; HERE is a list of exercises you can easily do throughout the day while standing at your desk.
Stay with me here, I'm not advocating you run out & purchase a new standing desk & chuck your chair in the garage sale pile. Take small steps. A few times a day prop your keyboard up & spend some time up there. There will be times, that “special” time of month for example, where your just gonna need park it in that comfy chair. But give some thought to making a small change today; consider how you feel spending a few hours of the day off your derrière.
Bottom line, you gotta do more than what your doing now, you gotta stand up Sister; take a breath…and smile.
