I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.
– Robert Louis Stevenson
I read this quote the other day and it reminded me about a little known and quirky fact about myself. You see, I love airports (much to the dismay of my husband who has to put up with my insistence at arriving at an airport at least 3 hours before the flight time).
Sometimes I think I’m more thrilled about the thought of going to an airport than the destination itself. The anticipation of travelling somewhere new, of leaving behind the mundane, of doing something adventurous; it fills me with joy. Even as a child, I can remember feeling the buzz of excitement as I walked into an airport and knew that today was no ordinary day. Today, I would be travelling somewhere.
When many of us embark on the challenge of starting our own business, we often find ourselves focused on the goal. We want great success, wealth and achievement. We want to create and grow a business that we can be proud of. We want to see our creative ideas and passions brought to life.
But it is only when you become an entrepreneur that you discover a truly wonderful thing: The joy of entrepreneurship isn’t in the goal. The true joy of entrepreneurship is in the journey. Every day, you wake up and you know you are taking yourself somewhere new. Yes it can be scary at times. It’s not always clear where you will end up, how long it will take, or how difficult that journey will be. But that is part of the beauty. The early days of entrepreneurship can fill you with fear and they can often be a struggle, but they can also be some of the most exciting days you will ever experience.
If you have you dreamed of starting your own business but the thought of taking that first step frightens you, remember this: it will be an exhilarating journey. And when we choose to fill our lives with great journeys rather than interesting destinations, that is going to be the choice that really lights up our souls.
