We all heard how important reading to our kids is to help them develop, learn and grow. We’ve written numerous times about our recommendations books for children of all ages. We also know its crucial for everyone to enjoy that cozy time reading with your kids. If you just read Good Night Moon every night you might lose your mind. So you can void that pitfall we’ve assembled ten of our favorite picture books out this year. This great crop of new picture books range from the perfect sleepy time books to those that will have you and your kids laughing out loud. In short, they would make great gifts for new parents, kids, and your own family.

Sure to be a classic this is a previously unpublished work from the beloved author of Good Night Moon. Read along with this adorable bunny as he greets a new day while the sun rises and then says goodnight as the sun goes down. Lush illustrations and soothing language make this a fantastic bedtime book. It has all the ingredients for a great gift!

The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”0062438891″ locale=”US” src=”http://projectevemoms.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/61BrLMz3ZFL.jpg” tag=”moms-proeve-20″ width=”454″]

The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors is another keeper from Drew Daywalt, author of The Day the Crayons Quit. This one will have you laughing out loud as Rock, Paper, and Scissors look for some high caliber competition. A great one to read out loud with the whole family with a nice message about healthy competition. Get ready to roshambo!

Shine!

A little sea star looks up at the night sky and imagines how much better life would be if she were a star shining down from the sky. All the while she’s missing the gorgeous world she inhabits under the sea. A beautiful message about appreciating where you are and images so lush I wish I could turn them into wallpaper make this a real keeper! A great book to read at the end of a long day. Another of my top picks for 2017!

There’s a Monster in Your Book

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”493″ identifier=”1524764566″ locale=”US” src=”http://projectevemoms.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/5110FsyJHL.jpg” tag=”moms-proeve-20″ width=”500″]

This is a standout read aloud for 2017. The first half will have the whole bedroom shaking, blowing, tickling and twisting to get the Monster out of the book. Then you’ll spend the next half coaxing this adorable guy to get right back in! A great companion to read alongside the Sesame Street classic, There’s A Monster At the End of This Book.

Little I

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”0062383000″ locale=”US” src=”http://projectevemoms.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/51ALhruKv2BL.jpg” tag=”moms-proeve-20″ width=”362″]

When Little i’s dot falls off and rolls into the sea, he embarks on an epic quest to find it. Children will be engrossed in the story and gorgeous paper cutout illustrations. Adults will be enthralled by the sly humor and playful use of language and punctuation as features of the plot. The charming message about growing up is a bonus. This is a new favorite in our house!

7 Ate 9

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”1484717791″ locale=”US” src=”http://projectevemoms.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/61eTnMzm56L.jpg” tag=”moms-proeve-20″ width=”498″]

The popular kid’s joke comes to life when ‘6’ visits a private ‘I’ to discover what happened to ‘9’. 7 Ate 9 is styled like a classic noir detective story that your kids ask to read again and again. The puns, word and number play are endless (infinite?) and are sure to tickle both children and adults. You’ll discover more with each read!

After the Fall (How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again)

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”1626726825″ locale=”US” src=”http://projectevemoms.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/51FbQPDILOL.jpg” tag=”moms-proeve-20″ width=”389″]

When I opened this book I thought it was going to be a retelling of the Humpty Dumpty story. I was pleasantly surprised to see how Caldecott Winner and author of beloved Beekle could make this story about perseverance and overcoming a fear. The illustrations are colorful and engaging; he thought of every detail. This is bound to be one of your kids’ favorite new picture books. Publishers Weekly just named this one of the “Top 17 Picture Books of 2017.”

The Bad Mood and the Stick

Bet you didn’t think someone could take a positive spin on a bad mood. Well leave it to New York Times Best Selling Author Lemony Snicket. He transforms a bad mood into a delightful story about friendship.

The Bad Seed

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”006246776X” locale=”US” src=”http://projectevemoms.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/51kiwEwZWeL.jpg” tag=”moms-proeve-20″ width=”410″]

In a lighthearted and funny way, this wonderful story explores the impact of labels with a literal “bad” seed. The seed’s personal history is humorously examined as the root of his poor behavior. Perhaps more importantly, the book explores the idea that we might continue to make choices that reinforce others’ ideas about us. Once labeled a “bad seed,” one might feel the need to live up to that label. In the happy ending, the seed elects to change and so do others’ perceptions of him.

If I Had A Little Dream

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”1481439243″ locale=”US” src=”http://projectevemoms.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/61H1dyyKIL-1.jpg” tag=”moms-proeve-20″ width=”360″]

The cover on this one hides the gem inside! The illustrations are lovely, and the lyrical prose will touch your heart. It captures the joy and beauty of everyday life and will help you and your child discover the extraordinary in the ordinary. A wonderful bedtime book. This is one of my top picks of new picture books from 2017.
