10 Must-Haves For Kid-Friendly Holiday Baking

Tis the season for lots and lots of baking!  Christmas is the time of the year for cookies, bars, and other sweet treats.  And if there’s anything children love more than eating the treats, it’s helping to make them!

If you’re welcoming one or more kids into your kitchen to assist with the holiday baking, here’s everything you need to make the process more fun for everyone, and a little less messy.

1. Step stool

This is a great choice because it’s sturdy and non-obtrusive.  Your little one will be at the perfect height to help with the baking and the dishes.  When you’re done, the stool folds up and tucks away.

2. Food coloring

Make sure you have a wide variety of food coloring when it’s time to frost cookies.  The more colors, the better!

3. Miniature rubber spatulas

Little hands will be better able to control where the frosting goes with these smaller versions of the rubber spatulas you use.

4. Plenty of small ramekins

These are an absolute must-have for holiday baking.  Use them to let kids safely crack eggs into, put different colored frosting in each, or pre-measure ingredients so the kiddos can dump them into the mixer.  The uses are endless.

These things are perfect for parties and for holiday baking.  Cover your table while you and your little pastry chefs are hard at work.  When you’re done, gather it up (along with all the sprinkles, stains, and crumbs) and throw it away!

Bigger cookie shapes allow for easier decorating, so keep that in mind when you’re picking out your cookie cutters for the project.  These ones have nice rubber grips on the top so kids don’t hurt their hands from pressing down firmly.

8. Piping bags

You can’t expect toddlers and kids to use a piping bag with the skill of a professional cake decorator, but if they’re old enough to squeeze a bottle, they’re old enough to make use of a piping bag.  Believe it or not, they may actually be easier than using a spatula because controlling where the frosting goes is more precise.

Those cookies need to cool before you can frost them, and you need to free up your cookie sheets for the next batch.  The solution is right here.

Stains happen, even when you’ve taken steps to prevent them.  A Tide stick should always be on hand when there are kids around, but it might really come in handy today.
