Startup Stories: 30 Years and Finally Off and Running

Tell us about your product or service.
Publisher of children’s rhyming science and math picture books

What inspired you to launch your business?
I wanted to be a doctor and was good at science and math until around the 5th or 6th grade where I became intimidated with the concepts. Though I tried I couldn’t get over my math and science phobia. I felt I just didn’t have what it took to be good in math and science and went another direction, communication arts and art. After graduating from college I had several jobs but wanted to become a children’s book writer and illustrator. Over the course of 30 years we have extensively researched children’s science and math books from every angle possible and have been rejected by many publishing houses, some even saying that are so sorry but it didn’t fit their profile. It has taken over 30 years for the cost of self-publishing to be affordable. My desire is to help children and their care givers to enjoy math and science, to keep alive the inquisitive nature in children, to help them see that math and science can be fun.

What problem does your business or organization solve?
The problem that our business solves is introducing children to math and science concepts at an early age. In doing this they become familiar with mathematical and scientific terms at an early age.

What has been your biggest challenge and how are you working to overcome it?
Our biggest challenge is marketing and the public’s perception about reading math and science books to children in the same manner they would read other children’s books.

How has Project Eve helped you and/or your business?
Connecting me with other women and reading their stories. The articles have been extremely helpful.

Give us an insider tip that relates to your industry.
Publishing has very little profit margin, therefore if you are considering publishing children’s books you must determine your market, consider the cost of an illustrator and the costs of producing your book as well as copyrights, ISBN, and distribution cosots
