Wrinkles seem to appear out of nowhere. From laugh lines to crow’s feet to those pesky crevices that surface on your forehead. But just because you’re not interested in going under the knife doesn’t mean you have to age gracefully. A good combination of treating sun damaged skin and protecting it from any further damage can keep you looking and feeling your best as you age. Here are some tips for staving off signs of aging:
1. Have a healthy skincare routine.
A skincare routine is the single most important thing you can do to protect your skin.
Cleanse your skin twice daily to remove built up makeup and debris that can clog and widen your pores. After cleansing, try a toner. Toner balances oily skin and allows moisturizer to work more effectively on the skin. After the toner has dried, moisturize your face. In the morning, make sure to use a moisturizer with built in SPF to protect your skin from unnecessary sun damage and then in the evening try a heavier moisturizer that repairs your skin while you sleep.
2. Add in a moisturizing mask.
Once per week, add a homemade moisturizing mask into your beauty routine. Try this recipe:
DIY Avocado Mask
1/2 avocado, mashed
1/4 cup uncooked oatmeal
1/4 cup plain yogurt
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon honey
- Combine all the ingredients and apply evenly to your face. Be particularly careful around the eyes.
2. Let sit for 15 minutes and rinse with warm water.
3. Stay hydrated.
This might seem simple, but it couldn’t be more important. Staying hydrated is the key to ageless skin. One of the reasons for the formation of wrinkles on the skin is a loss of moisture. Drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water per day is recommended, but if you live in a warm, dry climate or you workout regularly and sweat a lot, you’ll need to drink even more water.
4. Reduce unnecessary stress.
Stress can make you look older than your years, especially when it keeps you from getting enough sleep. Stress can also cause you to frown or scowl and over time these temporary lines can turn permanent. Take steps to reduce stress in your life whether it’s through yoga, meditation, exercise, or deep breathing.
5. Add in minerals.
Minerals like selenium help to prevent wrinkles by neutralizing the free radicals that cause skin damage while increasing the elasticity of the skin. Copper is another mineral that’s beneficial to the skin because it’s used in the formation of collagen, which prevents the skin from sagging. You can take them as a supplement or enjoy in your diet. Selenium is found in Brazil nuts, tuna, wheat germ, and sunflower seeds. And copper is found in liver, sesame seeds, oysters, and dark chocolate.
6. Try facial massage.
Facial massage is another tool for rejuvenating the skin. Feel the stress and tension drip from your facial muscles. By relaxing the muscles on the face, you can reduce the tension and stress that can cause fine lines and wrinkles. Here are the steps to facial massage:
- Use the index finger on one hand to massage between the brows in a circular motion.
- Apply light pressure to the temples and hold for 10 seconds.
- Massage the jaw joint for 10 seconds in a circular motion.
