Find the Best Dustbuster – 6 Top Picks

A great dustbuster aka handheld vacuum can be a lifesaver with a toddler or a new pet in the home. Once your baby is on the move you’ll find you want to zap up messes they might encounter and the messes that they make easily and often. New pets, oh my the mess! This is a roundup of the best dustbuster on the market we could find. A good dustbuster has need great suction, ability to deal with smooth surfaces and plush carpet, they can’t be too noisy, and need to be easy to clean. I’ve tried and tested dozens of them before coming up with my current favorites. Fortunately, things have improved in the years since I got my first dustbuster after college. Back then I needed two machines to get the job done one plugged in and required vacuum bags! Crazy!. One also had a rotating bush that was great at times but also occasionally sprayed messes behind it. My cordless dustbuster was good in a pinch but was so weak after just a bit of pet fur was in it regularly made me think a good broom would work better. Fortunately, things have changed and you can find great dustbusters that are cordless have great suction and never require a vacuum bag. Here are my top picks for the best dustbusters on the market today:

This Dyson is a Rolls Royce style dustbuster with a price tag to match. However the quality is unbeatable. After I purchased my first Dyson I actually found myself talking about how amazing it was at cocktail parties (not even close to what I would normally find interesting). This dustbuster has 2-3x more suction power than the rest of the pack. It doesn’t loose power based on fullness. Easily dealt with pet hair, kitty litter, cheerios, and Christmas tree needles on its low setting. It’s high setting was really only necessary when I was trying to get at things wedged deep into cushion crevices. Its top of the line but you will give it top marks.

At less than half the price of the Dyson dustbuster is this handheld vacuum was best bang for the buck in our opinion. While not as powerful as the Dyson this Black and Decker charged up super quickly, had strong suction (the cyclonic style keeps debris away from the filter to keep it strong as it fills, it also has 3 layers of filters and was a dream to clean. As an added bonus the pivoting nozzle made it compact to store and charge and also helped me to get at hard to reach spots. Its best feature by far in my book was the easy time I had emptying and cleaning it. Gone are the days when I had to remove multiple parts just to empty the darn thing. With this one I vacuumed up the mess then walked over the trash can and opened the latch and dumped it out. I could also easily rinse it out when I needed a deeper clean.

At an even lower price, this is a  more traditional looking Black and Decker model. It worked reasonably well so long was we kept emptying it after each use (unlike the model above and the Dyson this one lacks the cyclonic suction so dirt can start to block the filter and slow the suction). We liked that it could be rinsed out when the dust on the inside made that necessary but it wasn’t the easiest to empty. The unique charging setup (upright on its backend) will work well for some folks but might not for others. Overall we ranked this as a decent budget-minded option.

Find the Best Dustbuster: Eureka RapidClean Step Handheld Corded Vacuum, 41A

Although this dustbuster has a cord it performed well enough and reliably enough for us to include it in this this. At six pounds it is substantial and is perfect for vacuuming stairs. With a rotating brush and a setting for bare floors it is a nice small alternative to a vacuum particularly when trying to deal with stairs. With cyclonic action the suction stayed strong and it was reasonable to clean. In the array of bagless handheld devices out there this definately has a role particularly in homes with carpeted stairs. However, if unlike some of the other models on this list it wouldn’t be my first pick for small, hard to reach crevices.

Like the Eureka above, this Dyson rests someplace between a pure dustbuster or hand vac and a full blown vacuum cleaner. However since it is lightweight, cordless and comes with attachments that easily turn it into one of the best dustbusters out there while also allowing you to easily vacuum drapes, stairs, and hard to reach vents we felt obliged to include it on the list. Like the purely handheld model above it was powerful, had great filters, and was easy to clean.  I particularly liked all the attachments; one of them gently lifted pet hair from one of our keyboards (yikes!). The only downside we found was the higher price and a great spot to store it and charge it out of site in our small flat which lacks outlets inside closets or a real basement. That said, once solved this could easily sub for a full-sized vacuum in our small space.

This is both a dustbuster and a cordless stick vacuum in one machine. Although it runs for a fraction of the price of the Dyson V6 Animal above, it the versatility and power are more limited. It transitioned easily from handheld to the stick which meant we didn’t have to lean over for every job. However, in stick-form it was hard to envision hefting it up in the air to do drapes and vents as I tried with the Dyson.  Out of the way charging for a small apartment was also a concern with this combination.

That’s my list of the best I could test. Is there a model you think I missed? Let me know in the comments and we’ll let you know why it didn’t make the cut or add it in an update!
