Tell us about your entrepreneurial product or service.
Stacy Chan is a London-based designer clutch bag brand. These luxury bags are designed in London, made in Italy, and are inspired by the various cities and countries where I have lived and explored. The brand is dedicated to using the highest quality materials and craftsmanship. Combining modern, design-led creations with classic shapes, it aims to create timeless, luxury products that are unique in the market.
What inspired you to launch your business idea?
After working for almost 10 years in investment banking, private equity and a hedge fund, I felt a strong desire to find a new challenge that would allow me to be more creative. I have always loved clutch bags and knew that I wanted to create something unique and different than what was already available in the market.
What problem does your business or organization solve?
There are many evening bags in the market place, but the large majority are all in the same shapes and styles, and many of them are made with low quality materials and mediocre manufacturing. The bags that I designed are different than all that are available – it took my very experienced Italian manufacturer almost a year before our first prototypes were completed. In addition, all the materials are high quality, including nappa leathers, real snakeskin and Swarovski crystals.
What has been your biggest challenge as an entrepreneur and how are you working to overcome it?
There have been a number of different challenges for different reasons. A significant obstacle was the shift from working for someone where there are expected working hours and set goals to having no schedule at all. It take a good deal of discipline to create your own checklists when you know what can be put off until tomorrow! Another challenge was exchanging the efficiency and punctuality of the financial sector for the fashion industry.
Give us one word that people might use to describe you.
Different people know me in varied settings; however, I think most people would agree that I am determined, which I believe will help me become a successful entrepreneur.
How has Project Eve helped you and/or your business?
I like Project Eve as it targets female entrepreneurs. It provides interesting articles on social media, finance and start-up challenges while also including inspirational stories of other women who are treading the same, sometimes difficult, but always exciting path of entrepreneurship.
Give us an insider tip that relates to your industry or startup story.
As an outsider trying to break into the fashion business, the best advice I have been given from many people is to have patience. Even though buyers and customers continue to give very positive feedback, it still takes time to gain brand recognition.
