Gaining Happiness and Financial Confidence

As a young-adult there was nothing more I wanted than to live the “American dream.” Buying a home. Having a good career. Driving a new car. Those hallmarks of financial independence were my goals. However, given the state of my financial situation a few years ago, I didn’t think those goals were achievable. For years, I spent my life living paycheck to paycheck. Some months I was flush, other months seemed unbearably tight. My finances were all over the place for over a year. In order to get that great career I had to change careers. A career change didn’t make things easy right away either.

The thought of being able to afford a new car seemed way out of reach. I spent my early twenties renting a small, studio apartment and basically living on ramen. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve given up personal joy because I wasn’t sure I could afford it. When I got married I vowed to get my finances in order. If I couldn’t do it for myself I could do it for my family. And now, even though my husband and I have gotten our finances situated, the thought that one day I could be back to living paycheck to paycheck because of one wrong move makes me constantly wary. I know I’m not alone, over 70% of Americans are financially stressed and a full 80% of people admitted that their personal finances keep them awake at night.

SunTrust Puts the Joy Back into Life

It took a while for me to let go of the accumulated stress to plan ahead, save money, and start enjoying the parts of life I was missing out on. I talked it out with my husband, put myself on a budget, and paid down my loans and started to save. It took many months of progress to finally sink in. I kick myself when I think about the amount of time and energy I spent worrying yet not working on a solution.
