Grooming a New Brand of IT Professional

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Capella University.

As a writer, my computer is my most valued asset. It’s my office. Whether I’m home or at a local coffee shop, if I’m working, my computer is on the go with me. It’s even gone on vacation with me because as a writer, deadlines don’t take a vacation. As my traveling office it also serves as my traveling desk…a place where I store all the tools necessary to get the job done. While that’s great and all, there’s always a danger knowing that all your valued work is stored in one place. Sure you can (and should) back it up on a portable drive, but there are plenty of times when I just forget. There have been times when I’ve lost documents and had to start from scratch. There have been times when my computer has decided to take the vacation I never gave it and simply go nuts!

women-it-professionalsIt’s these times when my computer goes nuts that I need a trusted person who can not only fix the problem, but explain to me why it happened and how to prevent it in the future. It’s the explaining part that’s key. I don’t speak “computer”, but I need someone who does and who can translate.

That’s why grooming a new brand of IT professionals is so important these days. A typical IT pro can study a system, understand it and perform the job. But, how many people have the skills to relate to people? These skills are sometimes referred to as “soft skills”. That’s where Capella University comes in.

Capella University offers a variety of online programs from certificate to doctoral to help IT professionals not only stay competitive, but lead in an industry that’s asking for more these days. While it’s great to know the job, can you work well with other team members? Can you be creative when it comes to problem solving? Can you analyze information and then interpret it so other people can understand it?

capella4You can see if you have these “soft skills” by taking the CEB IT Talent Assessment  offered to you for free for a limited time by Capella University. You’ll find out quickly which of the 12 competencies you excel at, and which one you could improve to help take you to the next level. These competencies include things like working together, adapting to change, and balancing analysis with judgment. When my computer goes nuts, these are the types of people I want to help me. I want the next generation of IT professionals.

Capella University is a great vehicle to become one of the members of the next generation of IT professionals. Capella can offer you an affordable yet high-quality education. When it comes to programs, Capella is the most logical choice because of its flexibility. It’s all done online. So you can sit in your pajamas and go to class if you want. It doesn’t get much better than that!

The bottom line is that when everyday people like me have computer problems and need help, we just want someone we can relate to. No one likes to feel like they’re being talked down to or spoken to like a child. That’s why those “soft skills” taught at Capella are so important. Anyone can read a book and memorize information, but not everyone can be a “real” person. It’s time to get real and check out Capella.
