In a recent Wall Street Journal MarketWatch column, “Do Chefs Make Better Financial Advisers?” I was honored to be featured along with several other advisors who transitioned into financial life planning from other careers, benefitting from a deeper level of client empathy than had they leaped straight into the financial fray. I noticed there were no former rock stars turned advisors listed in the article. Perhaps there should have been.
First, on the eve of the Fourth of July (and my own Third of July birthday!) what career could be more American? Those performers literally sweat independence. Second, surprising gems of financial wisdom are often heard if you pay attention to their lyrics. To help you celebrate the Fourth, here are a few of our favorites, from some Rock & Roll Hall of Famers and related luminaries:
A person is a success if they get up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between does what he wants to do.

If you drive a car, I’ll tax the street.
If you try to sit, I’ll tax your seat.
If you get too cold, I’ll tax the heat.
If you take a wax, I’ll tax your feet.
– The Beatles, Taxman

So oh Lord won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz

Whether or not it leads to a filmmaking career or a Benz of his own, a mother couldn’t be prouder of her musician son Devon and his bandmates in Sprechen sie Awesome. Check out their Rockumentary inspired by “This Is Spinal Tap” and enjoy! (Who remembers watching this 1984 mockumentary of the world’s loudest band?)
