How Much Sleep Do You Need
When was the last time you got eight hours of sleep at night? For me, it was definitely before I had kids. I remember being able to sleep a good ten hours at a time and think nothing of it. Those days are long gone. Just like many people, I’m lucky if I get a straight six hours a night.

Results of a new study say the recommended sleep for adults ages 25-64 is seven to nine hours a night, that is if you want to function on all cylinders. Teenagers and children obviously need more sleep, while those over 64 fall into the seven to eight-hour group. Not getting enough sleep can have negatives effects on things like weight and mood and may even contribute to diabetes.
Some people can function at full throttle on just seven hours of sleep. Others need ten hours. The recommendations are just that, recommendations. If you’re productive and healthy for seven hours, then stick to it. But, if you realize you’re relying on caffeine to get you through your day or if you have health problems, then you may want to give the recommended sleep schedule a try.
Not Getting Enough Sleep
Have you ever pulled a few all-nighters in college or with your newborn baby? You may have thought you could just “make-up” that sleep the next day and feel fine. In reality, you feel like a zombie, and rightfully so. Researchers have found that staying awake for 24 hours straight can take a toll on you emotionally and decrease your attention span which may, in turn, make you more likely to have an accident.
While you may have no choice staying up with a newborn baby, if you’re trying to pull an all-nighter to get things done, you’ll be better off sleeping for a few hours. Since lack of sleep lowers your attention span anything you’re trying to study probably won’t sink in as well anyway.
Knowing if You are Getting Enough Sleep
Of course, if you feel tired, you are probably not getting enough sleep. But, there are other things to look out for to figure out if you are sleep deprived. Do you need your alarm to get up on time? Do you move at a snail’s pace by the afternoon? Do you get sleepy behind the wheel or after you’ve just eaten? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you may be sleep deprived.
There are a lot of things you can do to improve your sleep no matter how many hours you are getting. The key is to find a schedule you can live with. It may be a case of trial and error until you can feel refreshed and ready to go in the morning.
