Now that you’ve got a head start on running your own blog, it’s important to understand the awesomeness that is guest blogging!
Guest blogging is one of the best ways to grow your online audience because it gives you the chance to express your written expertise for an entirely different audience than your already-existing readers. When you guest blog on someone’s site, they promote your article to their audience through social media, and they also link back to your website (which is great for SEO purposes). This, of course, offers up plenty of opportunity to bring fresh sets of eyes to your content.
While guest blogging on other bloggers’ sites is highly beneficial for your brand and your reputation, it’s equally as important to host guest blogs on your website. By gaining credible guest bloggers, your website in turn gains credibility, as well. It’s a two way street, and this is how you can work on landing your first guest post for your website.
Email some bloggers who regularly cover similar topics as you. Do you read a particular website frequently and do you support/agree with the things they publish? This is a great place to start! Send an email to introduce yourself to these bloggers! If you already have an existing relationship with them, ask if they’d be interested in guest blogging for your site. You can either send them a certain topic you’d like them to talk about based on their area of expertise, or you can offer to brainstorm topic ideas with them. Hopefully they will agree to write for your website (after all, it’s mutually beneficial), but if not, don’t take it personally! Some bloggers don’t accept guest blogs on their websites, and also choose not to publish elsewhere. Sometimes they may just have a lot on their plate, and simply don’t have the time. Keep in touch with them anyway. You never know when another opportunity for either of you will present itself.
Meeting with industry-savvy peeps in person is so important for your business and your reputation. You can only interact so much with people through the power of the Internet, but nothing beats one-on-one, face-to-face communication. If you are fortunate enough to meet up with someone who happens to be involved in a certain area that your readers would be interested in, ask them to contribute to your blog! Even if they aren’t bloggers themselves, they still have a story, and they still have something to offer. And nothing says that you can’t edit their work…you know, just in case they aren’t the world’s best writers!
Let people know through social media that you’re looking for a great guest blogger to cover your topic of choice. You may come across a blogger that you had never heard of before, and you never know what can come from this! Seriously – the power of one little tweet is surprising. You never know who you’ll find. What to do when you get your article from your guest blogger
The blogger will send you their article either in a Word doc or in an email. You can ask them to send you the HTML for it, or you can just format it yourself. I like to format it myself, personally! So you’ve got your article, and now you can publish it! Here are few things to remember:
- Make sure to state clearly that this is a guest post, and link back to the guest blogger’s website
- Try to include a short bio at the bottom of the post so that readers can understand who this person is and why they are blogging on your website. Why should they read what this person says? Keep it short n sweet!
- Include a head shot of the guest blogger! It’s always nice to put a face to the name.
- Announce the post! Send out a tweet or two, and post to other relevant social networks. Help spread the word and express your appreciation for the guest blogger’s work. After all, you probably didn’t pay them to contribute to your site, it’s just supposed to be mutually beneficial for the two of you.
