How to Survive Without Sleep

Sleep. You need it. You want it. But, sometimes you just can’t have it. Whether it’s a crazy schedule or just too much on your plate, many of us go without the recommended amount of sleep . Sometimes when we actually do get sleep, it’s not good sleep, so we still end up feeling tired. So can you survive without sleep? While you should try to get some good shut eye, here are some ways to make it by.

Exercise to Survive Without Sleep

Running is a great exercise to get some natural perks

You may be thinking, if I don’t have time to sleep, how can I find time to exercise? Well, you really should. Exercise releases endorphins. These endorphins make you more alert without having any caffeine. Think of it as a natural way to stimulate your body. Just don’t overdo it. Then you’ll end feeling too tired which would defeat the purpose.

Eat Right to Survive Without Sleep

Apples make a great snack when you’re tired

While it may seem easier to pop a donut or sugary snack when you’re feeling sluggish, think again. What you put in your body may help you survive without sleep. So, instead of that piece of cake, opt for an apple or other healthy snack. While the apple does have sugar, it isn’t nearly as much as you would find in a donut or piece of cake.

Take a Power Nap to Survive Without Sleep

If you haven’t had a good night’s sleep, try a little power nap. A cat nap is just 20 or 30 minutes of rest, not an hour or two. Studies have shown a good power nap can boost your brain because you’re most likely not getting past the second stage of sleep. Once you do, you’ll end up feeling groggy rather than refreshed.

Prioritize to Survive Without Sleep

You’re at work after a horrible night’s rest but still need to survive without sleep. What should you do? Prioritize your tasks. Do the most challenging tasks first. This way you should be able to focus better. If you’re tired from the get go, chances are you’re going to hit a bigger slump by the time late afternoon arrives. Save the easier assignments for later in the day when you may not be as focused.

Keep the Lights on to Survive Without Sleep

While this may sound like a no brainer, you would be surprised at how many people don’t do it. If you’re feeling sleepy, don’t dim the lights. Keep them on so you stay more alert. It’s a fairly simple idea. Keeping the lights on will keep you awake and focused. Remember, it’s harder to fall asleep with the lights on than off.

Although there are ways to get around functioning without a good night’s rest, you really should try to get as much rest as you can. Without it, you run the risk of triggering other health problems. If you’re having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, be sure to contact your doctor.
