It’s Time to Wake Up People! The Matrix and Your Micro Businesses

I know you’re out there. I can feel you now.

I know that you’re afraid. You’re afraid of us. You’re afriad of change.

I don’t know the future. I didn’t come here to tell you how this is going to end.

I came here to tell you how it’s going to begin.

Who wouldn’t want to live in the Matrix? Minus the crazy programs trying to kill you, the Matrix is a pretty cool place. It’s a place where anything can happen.

But…Staying in the Matrix will hurt your micro business.

How the world works today is not how it will work in the future. Times are a-changin my friends. It’s time to stop living in the Matrix and wake up.

Here’s the crux of the issue:

If you don’t have a long-term sustainable business, you won’t be in business long-term. Big Business is creating sustainability plans right now. They are preparing for the future, and designing strategies based on sustainable business practices: renewable energy, socially responsible trade, recycling, zero waste, re-purposing….

It’s time to learn from the big boys.

It’s time to take the red pill.

Your Micro Business Now

As a group, we are incredibly diverse.  We cover every industry and sell every product. But we have a few things in common. We are on our own; so we don’t have a division to create a long-term sustainable strategy for us.

We have to create it ourselves.

I don’t know the specifics of your business and sustainability. My business is digital, and mostly online. For me, sustainability includes working out of a backpack in coffee shops, or wherever I can find WiFi. But it also means choosing Google’s cloud services whenever I can because their data centers are working towards a zero carbon footprint. And that’s better than anything I can get locally.

So it’s up to you to figure out what makes sense for your business.

Your Micro Business in the Future

Do you use non-renewable energy or create/sell products made with non-sustainable materials? Anyone who uses plastics, heats with oil, uses gas…basically everything we do every day will change in the future. And the future is coming faster than you think.

Fact: We are at the end of the industrial age. No one knows what comes next, but it’s foundation will be based on sustainability. We have no choice.

Waking Up

My real fear is that micro businesses will be caught off guard. Big Business understands change is coming. But who’s going to help micro businesses create long-term sustainable strategies?

At this time, no one but you.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t believe what I’m saying. It will happen whether or not you believe or are prepared. I’m not saying The Sky is Falling! And I’m certainly not suggesting you freak out, build a bunker, and prepare for end days.

What I am saying, is that Big Business is preparing for the future right now. So wake up and follow their lead.

The Bottom Line:

I don’t know what sustainability will look like for your micro business. I don’t know when it will impact your bottom line. But I do know Big Business is preparing for the new world. Take ten minutes to research what they are doing. Make choices that will move you towards sustainability.

Don’t pretend its not happening.
