Living in the Moment for “Busy People”

flat,550x550,075,fAlright, I’ll confess, I’m no guru zen master.

In fact, I’m already thinking about checking my LinkedIn profile, e-mailing contacts that I made last weekend, and why Ashley and Joey have to hate each other on Bravo’s Long Island Princesses (Sounds familiar?). Yea, I didn’t think I was the only one. It seems as if wherever we go there is an influx of information roaming around in our heads screaming for attention.

Wouldn’t it be cool if we could just round-up our thoughts and get them to get in line and raise their hands before speaking up? At least that would happen if we didn’t have a deadline for this, or need to make money for that, or take care of whatever we choose to fill in this blank with. But, the counter-thesis to that argument is this: You see, there is ALWAYS going to be something that you “have” to do. It’s the way we feel some sort of control over our lives. However, it tends to do the opposite. We think that if we can just get it done all at once, then we’ll be at peace. But peace is the absence of stress, anxiety, and suffering.

I don’t know about you, but when I think of my ever-growing to-do list it makes me want to curl up in a ball in the fetal position. Not the most peaceful picture.

So, what are we to do?

Apparently, there is this thing called living in the moment.

Now, What is Living in the Moment?

Living in the moment, at least to my understanding, is not some foo-foo super hippie state of being that only yoga instructors and gurus can attain.  Anyone can live in the moment, at any time, for however long they want. It’s a choice! Living in the moment or being hyper aware of your surroundings and your role in it is an act of letting go of the stress from your past and the anxiety of your future. It’s breathing in the summer air, while noticing that Fall is creeping up right around the corner. It’s seeing an authentic smile on a relative’s face, while knowing that they went through hell this past year and made it through. It’s reading a book and having a flash of joy flood deep in your belly as you realize, that just like the author, you too can make your dream into a reality.

You can’t worry about how you are going to pay your bills, finish that project, or find “the one” at the exact same moment you are engaged in something else.

You’ve come so far, young skywalker.

Sometimes, life throws you curveballs. You expect it to go one way, and then it laughs and tells you to go another way. Like Steve Jobs said, “You can not connect the dots moving forward, only looking back.” Looking at the surface of your current situation, can make you question if life is ever going to change for you. But if you do a life review, look back on where you came from and where it has led you up to this present moment, you’ll see a path start to form.

When you realize how far you have come, it gives you hope and peace to know that you are only going to get better. And, for those who are struggling (like most of the country!) there is a season to every stage of this human existence. Even after the coldest darkest winter, the flowers can still break the soil and come out into full bloom. If a seed can break soil and manifest into a beautiful flower, what is stopping you from manifesting your dream?

Choices, choices, choices…they are yours.

Now, I’m not saying we are going to instantly start living in the moment from here-on-in. Like what was said before, living in the moment is a choice. And, with all choices, we do them constantly.

Whenever, you feel stressed or overwhelmed, stop and really notice the craftmanship of your fingers (I know, it sounds a bit strange at first, but I’ll explain). I look at the ridges, and texture of my skin on my fingers whenever I am overwhelmed. One, because it’s a tangible thing I can focus on that I will always have on me (not planning on losing my fingers anytime soon!), and two, they are divine. When I look at my fingers, I think about all the hard work and careful attention to detail that must have gone into designing them (everyone has unique hands and fingers). If God, can spend so much careful attention to detail on my fingers, I can only imagine what details were put into my life path and journey.

This hope and faith that I hold for my future is the juice that will get me through my low times and push me towards my dreams. It will do the same for you as well.

There is peace in hope and faith, and when you allow yourself to hope and trust you can more easily fall into the moment and live.

So my call to action for you is….

Stop stressing and live in the moment! :p

Best of Love!
