Mingle Tip -Think of Everyone You Meet as Your Best Friend

Mingle Tip -Think of Everyone You Meet as Your Best Friend

Many of us have trouble getting comfortable when we talk to people, especially strangers.
I have discovered a way to overcome this problem: Think of everyone you meet like they are already your best friend.  This may sound like a strange thing to do, but I think it could work wonders if you have any trouble talking to people.  Here are some thoughts:(1) Thinking like people are already your best friend will help you relax.  There is nothing to prove.  There is no reason to worry about what they think about you, or about doing something embarrassing.  You can relax and be yourself.  (2) Notice that I used the word “already”.  I say act like people are “already” your best friend because you don’t want to act like you wish they were your best friend.  Big difference.  If you are just hoping that they will be your best friend you will be too tempted to kiss up and/or try hard to win them over.  Assume that it has already happened.

(3) You will be more likable.  Not that we should be trying too hard to be likable, but being at your best definitely can’t hurt.  Just don’t try to fake it.

(4) Your best friend doesn’t want to hear you kissing up to them.  If you got all giddy and peppy trying to impress your best friend he would probably say something like “Come on, man. Cut the crap.”  There is no need for pretense or sugar blowing with your best friend.  Be real.

If you try this suggestion and the person doesn’t respond well to you, don’t worry about it.  Hopefully you were able to relax and be your real self.  Some people will like you, some won’t.  That’s life.  It’s not worth worrying about.
