Startup Stories: Organizational Culture and Talent: Making the Most out of Work

Tell us about your product or service.
Magnet works with companies on strategic people engagement. Organizational culture, talent assessment and selection, leadership development, performance management, executive coaching…. if there is an HR topic that is strategic, we’ll partner with your organization on it. We’ve also launched a business line for the individual (vs. organization)– is where you can learn about our individual coaching offerings. Many “coaches” exist who went through little or no training. At Magnet, we work from a foundation of graduate school psychology training and decades of experience in companies.

What inspired you to launch your business?
We were at a start-up automotive company after years of working in consulting. The automotive company closed and we had been bitten by the “start up bug.” We had been an integral part in creating unique and effective culture and people practices in an automotive setting, so we knew we could help companies in other industries.

What problem does your business or organization solve?
We help people feel valued and engaged in their workplace so that the business of the business –rather than people drama–can be the focus.

What has been your biggest challenge and how are you working to overcome it?
Getting leads outside of our own professional networks has been the biggest challenge. We are networking and really being less “shy” about singing the value of our delivery and encouraging others to have people they know in business leadership contact us.

Give us one word that people might use to describe you.
Inspiring. (Our company, I mean. We inspire people to embrace new ways of handling people issues).

How has Project Eve helped you and/or your business?
Project Eve and Magnet started about the same time, so it was encouraging to be involved in the beginnings of our company with a fledgling network.

Give us an insider tip that relates to your industry.
Surveys indicate more than half of workers are not engaged in their work. This translates to real dollars lost through mediocre customer service, lack of execution of innovative ideas, and other laissez-faire approaches to work. Most of this disengagement can be tied back to old-fashioned organizational practices and/or leadership styles which need to be fixed for the sake of the business and the well-being of the people in the business.
