Family Movie Night! A fantastic way to get everyone in the same room, doing the same thing right? Less so if you can’t find a movie for everyone to enjoy (including yourself!) or, god forbid, burn the popcorn and stink up the whole house.
With only a little advanced planning and research you can create a fun evening and avoid the pitfalls (bad movies, burned popcorn). Here are our tips to create a fantastic, fun night and our top 5 movies that kids and parents can enjoy together.
1. A great family friendly movie.
2. Find a comfy, cozy spot for the family to gather. Mix it up, get out some blankets maybe even sleeping bags and pillows. Join your kids on the floor! Try to remove yourselves from your usual spot where the temptation to check email or the mail or a magazine might kick in.
3. Make a great healthy snack. Popcorn is a great choice. Its a whole grain, low in calories and isn’t too much of a mess. (One of our favorites is PopSecret Homestyle, what’s yours?) Popcorn is super easy with little mess and now there is Perfect Pop, a great app that assures you take it out of the microwave at the perfect moment to avoid a giant clump of black, burned popcorn and pop all but a few of the kernels.
Generally, my own success rate (without the app) varies to the extreme from large chunks of blackened popcorn to more than a quarter cup unpopped kernels. Perfect Pop takes all the variability away. Its super easy you just hit start, turn the volume on your phone up and a cute little stopwatch starts and monitors the frequency of the pops. Then the app tells you exactly when the kernels have started to slow so you have maximum, yummy popped popcorn and zero burn.
4. Gather your kids together and announce what the movie selection is. We feel that being a dictator is okay particularly in this setting for several reasons: a) it gives you a shot at watching something you may want to see AND skipping over the possibility you’ll be stuck watching Frozen or Cars for the 20th time b) it avoids conflict between the kids c) it helps you expand their horizons and pick some movies they may not even be aware of.
