Startup Stories: Saving Water - One Fish Tank at a Time!

Tell us about your product or service.
We import and distribute EcoBio-Block Products for aquariums and ponds. EcoBio-Block was developed in Japan over 15 years ago to purify polluted waters using nature’s own beneficial bacteria and later modified for use in aquariums. Highly effective bacteria colonies live and multiply in volcanic rock and disperse about every 30 minutes keeping levels of the bacteria consistently high. These bacteria break down organic waste into safer by-products, making aquarium and pond water clear, clean, healthy and odor-free.

What inspired you to launch your business?
We had a pond with koi in it when we lived in Long Island. Although the koi were beautiful and fun to watch, taking care of the pond was a lot of work. When we moved up to central NY, my husband wanted a local fish farmer to raise a certain kind of Japanese fish, but the farmer suggested we raise the fish ourselves. So we started a small fish farm (more fish means more work!). About 7 years ago, my husband was going to visit his aging mother in Japan and because we were raising fish, he looked on the internet to check out what was happening in Japan. That’s how we found EcoBio-Block. That trip to visit mother turned into a business trip and we got the rights to sell EcoBio-Block in the U.S. and Canada. As I am a native American and had been doing all the copywriting for our former graphic design business, I take care of the communication, business, and research and am the official owner of ONEdersave Products LLC.

What problem does your business or organization solve?
People who keep fish, turtles, amphibians and reptiles have a problem with waste, either from the animals themselves, the food they are given or from the environment. The waste makes the water they live in or use, dirty and foul-smelling. Taking care of that waste entails a lot of work, primarily because it necessitates water changes to keep the water fresh and odor-free.
EcoBio-Block’s beneficial bacteria breaks down organic waste in aquarium and pond water into by-products which are safe for aquatic animals, making the water clear, clean and odor-free, just as these bacteria do in nature. The volcanic rock with which it is made also has a purifying effect and its porosity makes it ideal for lodging bacteria. This process also speeds up the nitrogen cycle. Using EcoBio-Block for aquatic inhabitants is a simple, easy, no-mess, and effective way to reduce maintenance and save water.

What has been your biggest challenge and how are you working to overcome it?
The biggest challenge has been to get people to believe in EcoBio-Block because it sounds too good to be true; they think it is expensive; they don’t know about it; and when they get it, they expect it to work immediately and pet stores appear to be reluctant to stock it because of the price and the fact that they have competing products on the shelf.

We are trying to up our marketing by using social media and other (particularly women’s) outlets like Project Eve, Moms In Business, the Story Exchange, and Open Sky to get the word out. We are also trying to educate people on the effectiveness of this product (the new formulation is even faster and better) and trying to help them understand that the product is not really that expensive if you break it down into the cost per month (for the medium size, it’s less than $3, because it lasts for about 2 years), not to mention how much you save in time, work and water. We are also trying to educate people through our website and by phone on how the EcoBio-Block works. It’s not electronic, it has to be cultivated like other living creatures, the only difference is that their food is the waste from the other living creatures. We are also trying to get some large chains to stock it in their stores, if they do, the cost of importing the product will go way down and we can lower the price by a lot, which will help our sales all around.

Give us one word that people might use to describe you.

How has Project Eve helped you and/or your business?
It probably has not helped me as much as it can because I haven’t had the opportunity as of yet to take much advantage of all Project Eve has to offer.
This archive however, looks to be an awesome opportunity.

Give us an insider tip that relates to your industry.
Most people who get into the fish hobby quit in less than two years because of frustration with cloudy water, foul odors and the amount of work involved in keeping the water clear and clean. My tip is to do a little research, find out which fish are the easiest to raise, the proper equipment and size tank you need and get EcoBio-Block. The whole point of having beautiful fish is to be able to see them and if you follow these tips, you can have a fun, satisfying hobby without the stress and work.
