Summer is coming soon! The clothes get shorter, the weather gets warmer, and it’s time for you to start rocking that summer glow. Skin safety is of the utmost importance. You can get an amazing spray tan without putting your skin at risk from the sun. Follow these important spray tanning tips so that you’re not looking orange, patchy or flaky.

Spray Tanning Tips – Know Your Options

Before you decide on where to go to get your spray tan you will need to understand your options.

Spray Tanning Tips – Option #1

Spray Tan in a Can – This is probably the easiest and most affordable way to get a spray tan, but it requires you to apply it yourself. Sometimes this ends up looking excellent and sometimes this can lead to streaky, orange skin. This means you may not get the results you were looking for. Check here for a list of popular tanning sprays (that actually work well!) you can buy at the store and apply at home. These come in a variety of shades and colors to match your skin tone. I recommend testing the spray on an area of your body that is not easily seen to find out if it’s a good match or not.

Spray Tanning Tips – Option #2

Spray Tan in Booth – This is the second most affordable and easy way to go. Essentially, you walk into a spray booth and it will spray your body in less than a minute. Sometimes this results in missed spots, but is otherwise effective. This also comes in a variety of shades. You can ask for a tester before hand, but you might have to pay for it. Most of them are very simple to use and have messages that tell you exactly what to do. You spray both sides, get out, towel off any excess, and away you go!

Spray Tanning Tips -Option #3

Spray Tan by a Technician – This is the most expensive but also the most effective way to go. If you are not shy, you can go into a private room with the technician who will spray your body. Some spray tan artists can even spray your body using contouring techniques (hello toned arms and legs!).

Regardless of which option you choose, you should always do these things for an even, long-lasting glow.

Spray Tanning Tips -Tip Number 1

Exfoliate! You will want to scrub all of your skin with an oil-free exfoliating scrub and loofah. If you leave the dead skin on, then your tan will look flaky. You will also want your skin hair and bump-free… shave, wax, sugar – do whatever it takes for the smooth skin. Do not use lotion or oil when you are done. Those can act as a barrier between you and the tanning spray.

Spray Tanning Tips -Tip Number 2

Get as close to naked as you feel comfortable. Getting a spray tan (whether you apply yourself or professionally) will stain your clothing. Don’t wear this season’s latest bikiniWear disposable underwear (or some you don’t mind throwing out), and dark, loose-fitting clothes after you finish. If your clothes are tight, they might rub off the spray.

Spray Tanning Tips -Tip Number 3

Use the barrier cream the tanning salon provides. Pay extra close attention to your hands, in between your fingers, your elbows, knees, and feet. It will act as a barrier and provide protection to quickly absorbing areas.

Spray Tanning Tips – Tip Number 4

Be Patient. Your tan will need to soak into your skin for at least 6-8 hours. No gym, swimming, or showering. Your tan will really soak in overnight when your body temperature heats up. When you shower the next day use lukewarm water so the tan doesn’t strip away as quickly. Also, try not to excessively rub your towel on your skin when you are drying off.

Spray Tanning Tips – Tip Number 5

Let your tan fade before reapplying. If you let your tan fade naturally before you get a new one, you won’t get any patchy spots.

Spray Tanning Tips – Tip Number 6

If you find that your tan has overpowered your skin, rub half of a freshly cut lemon on spots that look unnatural. Then gently exfoliate with a citrus based scrub.

Happy Spray Tanning!
