Startup Stories: Beauty is fun again!

Tell us about your entrepreneurial product or service.
I own a beauty company. We provide services such as wedding and special event makeup, children’s spa birthday parties, makeover parties and we also do personal consulting in a client’s home. We sell Rodan + Fields Skincare, a highly effective anti-aging line from the Drs who created Proactiv.

What inspired you to launch your business idea?
When I was 19 I was in the US Army and deployed to Bosnia. It was here, in a camp full of men that my love for makeup and all things beauty began. I was looking for a way to feel feminine, to regain a little piece of the woman I was. And makeup gave that to me. This past June, 17 years later and while in labor with my third child, I had an amniotic fluid embolism. I went into cardiac arrest for 20 minutes. My son had to be delivered via emergency c section and he also had to be resuscitated as he had stopped breathing as well. Most women do not survive this event. It is a 1/80,000 occurrence with a 20% survival rate. I did not see my son for a couple of days as I was placed in ICU with a breathing tube and my son was in the NICU. My poor husband was a wreck. The doctors told him they did not know when I would wake up and that they were going to transfer me to a larger hospital so that I could be placed on a cooling mat so that my brain would not overheat. It was during this same conversation that another doctor came and told him that I had opened my eyes!! All the doctors said my son and I were miracles, and that someone was looking down upon us and protecting us. It was after this that I decided not to return to work as a makeup artist working for a big company, and start my own business. It was always a dream of mine but after all that had happened my inspiration was high and I felt I could “do all things through Christ who strengthens me!” I have never been happier in life. Every day I thank God for my two little girls, my baby boy and my wonderful husband who held us all together through our difficult time!

What problem does your business or organization solve?
Helping women feel confident by looking their best. And the better a woman feels the healthier she will be! We do the same for young girls with our spa birthday parties by showing them that they can be girly, strong and confident all at the same time!

What has been your biggest challenge as an entrepreneur and how are you working to overcome it?
Getting our name out there and helping people feel comfortable doing business with a small and new company.

Give us one word that people might use to describe you.

How has Project Eve helped you and/or your business?
I only discovered you a couple of days ago on twitter, but since then I’ve read and retweeted many of your articles because they are so incredibly relevant and helpful.

Give us an insider tip that relates to your industry or startup story.
Exfoliating solves many issues including dry skin and flakiness. Once you’ve exfoliated (I recommend twice a week) your skincare will work better, and your makeup will be more flawless!
