Startup Stories: Far and Wide Collective

Hedvig Alexander, Founder of Far & Wide Collective

Tell us about your entrepreneurial product or service.
Far & Wide Collective is an online enterprise that works with artisans in post-conflict and developing countries to give them access to buyers in the international market. Currently we are representing artisans from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, India, Sri Lanka and Kenya, but our list is growing!

What inspired you to launch your business idea?
After working in development for close to a decade, it became increasingly evident that there were so many incredible artisans who just could not sell their goods past the local bazaar. So the inspiration came from my time spent with these wonderful, creative people, whose crafts are more and more in demand in the western world, and I set out to try and help them build their own small businesses, and especially to educate and empower these artisans – particularly women – and give them a way to sustain themselves and their families.

What problem does your business or organization solve?
We are providing international access to artisans in impoverished communities who would otherwise never have the chance to sell their product past their rural village. We are teaching them how to sell their goods, and working with them on designs and quality to ensure that the products are market-ready; and we are giving them a chance at a better life.

What has been your biggest challenge as an entrepreneur and how are you working to overcome it?
Honestly, the biggest challenge has been getting the word out. Because we are a startup, we really don’t have a marketing budget so everything has been done very organically. If we’re going to make this work, we need to spread the word far and wide!

Give us one word that people might use to describe you.

How has Project Eve helped you and/or your business?
If Project Eve can help to promote us in any and every way, we would be eternally grateful.

Give us an insider tip that relates to your industry or startup story.
Nothing happens overnight. Everything takes longer than you think it will.
