Startup Stories: The Boomerwear Project

Tell us about your entrepreneurial product or service.
Activewear for Baby Boomers and Seniors

What inspired you to launch your business idea?
I previously ran in organized monthly 5k’s. Since I live in the North East where temperature can be a factor at 8am in the morning there were times I would wear leggings and shorts over them for warmth. I noticed one of the pair of shorts I owned had pockets and I was able to carry my music and car keys comfortably while I ran. When the weather grew warmer I would change the length of my leggings from ankle to capri than finally bike still wearing the outer shorts never compromising my style or hindering my pace. In one of my many races my keys fell out of my pocket while I was nearing the finish line, I had to turn back to retrieve them. At that point I came up with the idea of making a prototype with zippered pockets to keep my items secure while I was active. I brought my two pairs of pants (leggings and shorts) and asked my local tailor to sew them together as one unit and to put zippers on the pockets, at that time my prototype was born. I did research and discovered there is no activewear designed specifically for the mature active person. I was able to have a few patterns and samples produced and will proudly boast the made in the USA label. Coverage is a lovely commodity when you age so why not design something solely for us, without compromising design or style.

What problem does your business or organization solve?
Having our very own line of activewear that will deliver modest, secure and chafe-free clothing without compromising style. In other words no fuddy-duddy stuff here!

What has been your biggest challenge as an entrepreneur and how are you working to overcome it?
Funding. I am asking family, but unfortunately many of them are in no position to assist me, am considering Kickstarter or other on line fund raising organizations.

Give us one word that people might use to describe you.

How has Project Eve helped you and/or your business?
Being able to share with those whom would never consider wearing activewear.

Give us an insider tip that relates to your industry or startup story.
Do your homework when considering working in the apparel industry, there are no such thing as patents and sadly your ideas may be copied.
