There really ARE plenty of fish in the sea… (and a bit of a sharky adventure)!

Every time that I travel somewhere, I always come back a little bit changed compared to the way I was before I left. Traveling introduces you to new experiences, new people, new perspectives, new foods, and new sleep patterns. Everything about traveling provides the opportunity to open your eyes to something you may have never considered before. Or, maybe it opens your eyes to something that seems to be common knowledge and seems to be obvious, but you’ve just never really thought about it in detail before.

When I went on a quick road trip to Tennessee and back, I learned 10 important lessons about myself and my business. When I first started building up Split Aces Media, I learned 25 important lessons in just four short months of traveling while working.

This latest adventure was no different. My eyes have been opened to a whole new world, and I am so excited that I was able to be a part of it.

I spent the past five days hanging out off the coast of Rhode Island with my dad and a group of amazingly talented and brave shark-diving individuals. I got to meet some super entertaining people, I drank Dunkin Donuts coffee every morning at 5 AM (because America runs on Dunkin), and I got a nice little New England tan with some sweet wetsuit tan lines to prove it.

We spent three days out on a boat looking for sharks, and we certainly found them. We found lots of them – blue sharks, mako sharks, and even a rare smooth hammerhead shark! We jumped in with our cameras at the ready, and while I was nervous at first, I am proud that I did it and that I can talk about this experience for the years to come. I didn’t feel threatened or intimidated at all once I jumped in the water with the blue sharks. I even got slapped in my side with the tail of one of them when he turned around to swim the other direction (that little jerk). The guys from Pelagic Expeditions really know what they’re doing when it comes to this shark diving stuff (thank goodness), and they made sure that we had an amazing and memorable time.

Plenty of fish in the sea

While out on the water with our group of six brave souls, I couldn’t help but think about blog topics so that I could post all of these awesome pictures. (Yes, even when I’m out diving with sharks, I’m thinking about my blog. Something may be wrong with me).

We’ve all heard the saying that there are plenty of fish in the sea.

When it comes to heartbreaks, starting new relationships, ending bad relationships, or whatever your situation may be, it is the easiest cliche that we turn to when we experience change in business or personal lives. You lost a client? Meh – there’s plenty of fish in the sea and you can go find another. You broke up with your significant other? Meh – plenty of fish in the sea, and you’ll meet someone new! You scared away the shark with your camera strobes? Meh – plenty of sharks in the sea… we’ll find a new one tomorrow.

I believe that this saying has become so overused that we, as a culture, have lost sight of its significance.

The truth is, there really ARE plenty of fish in the sea.

There are endless numbers of social media consultants all fighting for the same type of clientele. There are thousands and thousands of travel bloggers. There are tons of food writers and foodie websites. There are millions and cajillons of musicians, songwriters, authors, lawyers, clothing designers, photographers, clowns… you name it. You are not the only one. There are plenty of fish in the sea.

So how do you make yourself stand out?

What’s special about you, and how can you play it up so that you become top of the food chain in this big ‘ol ocean?

You do it by doing things that matter.

You do it by helping people.

You do it by being kind to everyone in your life – be it the random obnoxious 3-year-old girl running around screaming in Wal-Mart with no shoes on, or your sweet 95-year-old granny, or your terrible boss that you can’t wait to quit on to start your own empire.

You do it by making an impact.

You do it by forming and building healthy relationships.

You do it by being relentless.

You do it by kicking ass. every. single. day.

You seize every fathomable opportunity that comes your way.

You say yes more.

You smile when you feel like frowning.

You speak up when you witness something wrong.

You change the world one day at a time!

Think about how to make yourself stand out from the crowd, and think about how you can improve yourself and your business every day when you wake up in the morning. There are plenty of fish in the sea, and we’re all just little fish in a big ocean.

What’s your story, and how do you make yourself stand out?

One other thing is that nearly all digital cameras can come equipped with a new zoom lens that allows more or less of any scene to generally be included by way of ‘zooming’ in and out. These types of changes in focus length are generally reflected inside viewfinder and on large display screen on the back of any camera.
