Take a day. You may find it difficult to get focused and motivated on that first day back, so give yourself some time to ease in slowly so you don’t become overwhelmed. Take that day to catch up and get organized.
Review phone calls and emails. Leave your out-of- office message on both your voicemail and email until the afternoon of that first day back. That way you aren’t bombarded with new phone calls and tasks to do right away. Prep for meetings. Before jumping in, you need to review what has been going on while you were away. Schedule meetings for later in the week and add time to your calendar to prepare. Meet with your coworker who was handling your clients and tasks while you were away and so you can be brought up to speed on the status of what has been going on.
Organize your space. Take time to read through any papers that have piled up while you were away, and process them accordingly. Also take some time to declutter your space. It’ll be easier to get back into a routine in an organized space free from distractions!
Prioritize. Don’t feel the need to jump in and handle everything right away. Instead, take some time to prioritize your tasks, then dig in and tackle one task at a time. When you look at your entire to-do list as a whole, it can feel overwhelming, so focus on one task at a time and feel good each time you cross something off the list.
