Some of you may already have read that I am writing a book for single mums who would like to set up their own businesses. It’s something that I am passionate about and would like to encourage more single mums to consider. The possibilities for financial stability and achievement of your dreams, through being self-employed, are endless and exciting. Sure it’s hard work – what isn’t – but the outcomes can be beyond your wildest dreams.
The one thing I’ve learnt, from doing my many tweet and LinkedIn ‘shout-outs’ for case studies is that single mums who are running their own businesses don’t equate what they are doing with being entrepreneurial. Therefore, when I was asking for information for my book and using the phrase ‘single mum entrepreneurs’ – no-one replied! However, when I changed the wording to ‘single mum business owners’ I started to get results.
Why is that?
I think it’s one of those BIG questions that takes much time and research to fully consider but my gut answer is this:
Single mum business owners just don’t believe that they are doing anything special. And entrepreneurs are pretty special aren’t they? Which means that they can’t possibly be one themselves. They’re just running a little micro-business, from home, just making ends meet possibly, and with no employees. That’s not what entrepreneurs do.
Ladies; If you do nothing else today, please take a look at what you do on a daily basis both in your business and in your personal life. You are extraordinary! In fact, you are probably the most extraordinary group of people I come across in my work as an entrepreneur coach/mentor.
You pull out all of the stops, and some that most people don’t even know exist, just to get you and your kids through the day. And then you do the same for your business.
In my book that makes you AWESOME!
So come on; take credit where credit is due, and allow yourself to have a very big pat on the back for being the person you are. The only one who thinks you’re just doing a pretty average thing is you. To everyone else, you are a star.
Have a lovely weekend; and stay happy!
