Tell us about your entrepreneurial product or service.
We have 2 services. The first SafelyMD, a free emergency medical and contact information data card that can be carried in your wallet, or placed in an elderly parents home in a prominent place, that can be scanned by emergency responders to get updated medical and contact info. That information can include all prescriptions, medical conditions, allergies, current doctors, family member’s contact info, pharmacy info, and even blood type, choice of hospital, resuscitation instructions and copies of medical health card information and powers of attorney. The second service is SafelyFiled. SafelyFiled gives an entire family a medical card and information form all in one account plus super secure storage of up to 1000 documents, videos and images. This storage is for very important legal, medical, financial and personal information that you need, and even more importantly, your family and other important people like your estate manager or attorney might need to find in the event of your death.
What inspired you to launch your business idea?
Two things inspired us in the beginning. First, our CEO’s Father passed away and although the family knew he was organized and had important papers and insurance policies, they could not find them when he passed away suddenly. So on top of the emotional sadness of his passing, the family had to deal with delays in taking care of his final wishes, and in closing out his estate. The legal process to get all of that resolved was long, expensive and delayed the emotional healing. Second, our CTO lives in the midwest, and her elderly mother (over 70) and her grandmother (over 90) both live in FL. Our CTO is their executor. Even with the ability to fly to FL in the event of an emergency, she could not get there fast enough to make sure the emergency personnel and attending physician would know her Mother and Grandmother’s wishes. So, SafelyFiled and SafelyMD was created to ensure that family members who need access to important documents and last wishes/instructions, had that information at their fingertips, no matter where they might be, and would know where the paper originals of those documents (if kept) are so they could be presented to legal and medical authorities if needed.
What problem does your business or organization solve?
A few major problems that families might incur. 1) Delay of estate closing at the death of a loved one; 2) Loss of money because a loved one who passes away as bank accounts, stock and other assets, in accounts that the family members and estate planners are not aware of or don’t have access to; 3) Keeping track of elderly parents, or their own, current prescription medications, medical conditions, allergies and doctors; 4) Since we’re have so many social media accounts now and get important documents digitally instead of paper, keeping track of those account log in and passwords and website information ourselves, much less letting our families know how to close them down in the event of unexpected incapacitation or death, is extremely important now. We provide free checklists on our website to help people gather that information together which is often times not even thought about until after something bad happens. How many people do you know still have social media presence even though they’ve passed away?
What has been your biggest challenge as an entrepreneur and how are you working to overcome it?
Marketing and PR. We are a very small team with a smaller budget since we are self-funded (for now). With all of the noise out there vying for our potential customer’s attention, breaking through to be seen and heard is very difficult. The other issue is trust and education. With so many afraid of storing such vital information in the “cloud”, and the recent news of security breaches with Target and even healthcare.gov, the average consumer is very afraid of storing such sensitive information in SafelyFiled. Yet, storing this information on their own computers, tablets, smartphones and even external hard drives, is much more risky as viruses and malware on those devices can steal your information without your even knowing it until it’s too late. We are starting to work through trusted associations and affiliations though to try to break through the noise.

Give us an insider tip that relates to your industry or startup story.
SafelyFiled and SafelyMD, although full of technical features and extremely secure, was designed with the “average” computer user in mind. We started with security in place first, and then designed the product to be easy to use for those who are of the boomer generation.
