What Do You Wish You Knew at 20?

They say hindsight is 20/20 and that certainly is true of life. What is the “end of the world” when we are 17 is merely a blip in our day at 47.

If you could grab a bit of lunch with your 20 year old self, what would you say? What do you wish you had known at that age? What advice did you receive that you wish you’d heeded.

Dr. Karin Smithson shares the 20 things she wished she’d known in an article that was published in the Huffington Post.

Each tip is good advice. I especially like the idea of not comparing yourself to others. She also talks about listening, apologizing, travel and taking good care of your body. But here is one great tip that Dr. Smithson shares that is especially important:

Trust the calling on your heart.
Don’t quiet the voice inside your spirit. DO the work to get where you are called to go … even if it is not where someone else thinks you should be going.

What do you wish you knew at 20?

One of the Purposeful Women team  members, Deborah Chaddock Brown, wrote an article on her 50th birthday celebrating the 50 lessons she’d learned.

Here are the first 10:

  • Honesty is the only policy
  • When you give without expecting anything in return, often you receive more than you bargained for.
  • Homemade beats store bought every time.
  • Wealth has nothing to do with your bank account.
  • The best things come in small packages; babies, kittens, daffodil bulbs, Dove chocolate.
  • Smile first – it will be reciprocated.
  • It costs nothing to befriend cashiers, toll booth operators, but it will make your day that much nicer.
  • Sometimes comfort food is just what the doctor ordered.
  • The customer is always right, even when they aren’t.
  • Perception is reality.

What would you add to the list?
